7.26.11 Cardinals

My grandmother likes cardinals, and how they pair up and stick together.
This is done in what I have come to call my "daily painting style." It's in gouache. I did another version on 7.29, in what I think of as my illustrative style. That will post in a few days.

7.21.11 Bowl of Cherries

Another take on the cherry bowl. This is more in my style—simplified. Rather than copying the still life as closely as I could, I left out some of the cherries and changed the position of one to make my composition. It becomes more about color and shape and less about a cherry bowl. The fact that I like this version better makes me feel even more intimidated by that Dutch realism.

7.20.11 Still Life of Cherries

This is about as traditional a still life as I have ever done. (At least since school.) I would love to have the patience to do a painting in the Dutch style of realism. I daydream about taking a class on that style of painting.

7.19.11 Uruguay

Patrick and I honeymooned in Buenos Aires. One day we took a ferry across the river (Rio de La Plata) to Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay. This is at a beach side store/restaurant where we spent some time relaxing and reading. My reference photo for this painting has been my computer wall paper since we got back.

7.17.11 Rose-toned Moon Flowers

The arts and crafts/art nouveau influence is strong on this one.

7.12.11 Black Cat with Plant

This oil painting reminds me of a pastel drawing I did of a philodendron when I was in high school—it had a blue outline too, only much stronger.

7.11.11 Poppies for August

The most noted birth flower for August is Gladiolus, but Poppies get a mention here and there too. I prefer Poppies, so here they are.

7.9.11 Windy Day

Last Saturday was a very windy day at the Hopkins Art Fair. This painting actually blew away from me twice in the process of making it.

One more for my leaves and fish series. I am headed out to relax by a lake this afternoon, so perhaps that is what inspired this one.

6.29.11 Bok Choy

My friend Adam sent me a photo of his bok choy that had gone to seed. My rendition looks like an underwater plant to me.
