Antlers, A. Starting with Z.

Over the next few weeks I'm going to be posting the pages of my soon to be published book Antler, A: A Cabin ABC Book, written by Hadley Barrows, one page at a time. I'm posting in reverse order so they will be in ABC order once they are all posted. I will include a link for ordering once it is available!

Week 52 – Great Egret

Week 52!

52 new paintings in one year. And actually, I did more than 52 paintings because I didn't count any of my Commemorate the Date paintings, or the 32 illustrations for Antlers, A. It feels good to have met my goal. It feels good to know I don't have a deadline next week!
So, my last painting for the project was this great egret, standing on it's nest in a deep green marsh. I have enough new bird paintings for my 2015 calendar, which I will put together in the next couple of weeks. I'll let you know when it is available.

Week 51 – Canadian Goose

It is somehow particularly satisfying to me to paint a goose. I base that statement on this painting and another goose (gosling and goose) watercolor I did earlier this year, for the soon to be released Antlers A, A Cabin ABC Book (written by Hadley Barrows).

Week 49 – Ovenbird

This is an ovenbird, a songbird in the warbler family. From Wikipedia: The nest, referred to as the "oven" (which gives the bird its name), is a domed structure placed on the ground, woven from vegetation, and containing a side entrance.

Week 48 – Nuthatch

Nuthatch. I've always liked black and navy blue together.

Week 47 – Coots

I first noticed coots on the lakes in Uptown Minneapolis. They caught my eye with their tuxedo coloring. I immediately thought they needed to be the subject of a painting. It has only taken me about 10 years to put brush to paper on this idea.

Week 46 – Peacock(s)

Watercolor is hard to edit. Sometimes when I don't like how a watercolor turns out, I give it a second try. Usually, I am no more satisfied with the second one than the first... This time though, I like the two together better than either one alone.

Week 45 – Ferns & Snails

For this Ferns & Snails painting, I ignored the fact that it was a larger size. I tried to approach it the same way I approach my 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 paintings, at least as far as composition. I also tried not to agonize over it, which is harder for me to do when it's a larger painting. It's a fine balance paying enough attention to detail and yet not overworking the painting.

Oil on wood panel, 24" x 36" $600
Prints will be available.

Week 44 – Red Ferns & Snails

A digression from my birds. This is a larger painting that I have been working on for the past several weeks. In the end, I think I like the study better. This piece, although larger, was a bit of a study and learning experience itself. I had forgotten how tricky red oil paints can be to work with.
I have another fern/snail composition in progress that I am enjoying. It will be ready to post in a week or two.

Oil on wood panel, 24" x 36" $600

Week 43 – Nightingale

I had no idea what a nightingale looked like before I looked it up. They are more subdued than I had imagined. But I like that tail flick.

Watercolor, 8" x 8" $150
prints available

Week 42 – Barn Swallows

Barn Swallows. I hadn't realized how red-white-and-blue swallow are. Or how much they look like little bombers when they are in flight. Their heads almost look like they have on a helmet in some of the reference photos I found.

Watercolor, 8" x 8" $150
prints available

Week 41 – Killdeer

My bird of the week is the killdeer. I like it's giant eyes, black stripes, and long skinny legs with knobby knees.

Week 39 – Robin

2015 is going to be the year of the birds. At least in terms of the Megan Moore Wall Calendar. So, I'm taking advantage of the structure and deadlines of my One-a-Week project to get the 12 birds painted. Since we're all so desperate for spring here in MN, I figured why not start with a robin.

Week 38 – Art 4 Shelter, Snails & Leaves on Sand

Art 4 Shelter, A Benefit for Simpson Housing Services is coming up on April 30. Full details are on their site: www.art4shelter.org. I am donating this piece to the sale. I thought since snails carry their house on their back it makes good subject matter for a benefit to help combat homelessness. I will also donate 30% of sales for any prints I sell of this image this year to Simpson Housing.
Oil on paper, 8" x 10", $150 at one day sale (details at art4shelter.org)
Prints: unmatted on 8.5 x 11 for $30, matted to 11 x 14 for $40

Week 37 – Study for Red Fern & Snails

This piece is a study for a larger painting and has more symbolism than most of my work. A recent post on the blog Leaf & Twig was inspiration for the Red Fern part of this composition. That post nods it's head at the book, Where the Red Fern Grows. Here is an explanation of the red fern symbolism in the book that I found online:
"According to legend, an angel has to plant the seed of the red fern, and so wherever there is a red fern, it marks something very admirable and special."
In my personal lexicon, snails are a symbol for babies (thanks goes to my older sister for that association).
So there you go. I think babies are very special. An alternate title for this could be "New Life." Which just happens to tie into the fact that there is finally some snow melting happening outside, and I have hope that spring is coming to Minnesota.
5" x 7" oil on paper. Prints available.

Week 36 – Village Weavers (South Africa)

I learned about village weavers on my trip to South Africa last summer. They make super cool nests—they build their own little bird houses that hang down from the tree branches.
I'm not in love with this composition. I wanted to show the whole tree, to show the effect of the hanging nests. But I think I'd like a closer crop on just two or three nests. And space to do a better representation of the birds themselves.

Oil on canvas 16" x 20"  $300

Week 35 – Nandi with Red

This is a small color study; I intend to do a large version of this concept. For the larger piece, I am still working on the palette and the profile of Nandi. I painted over an old painting for this one. The turquoise is a color that was showing through in small places. I decided to pick it up and use it more intentionally as well.
Oil on wood panel, 6" x 6," $150

Week 34 – Lazienki Park (Warszawa)

I took the gray background idea and applied it to the background branches. The birds in this painting are called Great Tit. I like their markings but don't love the sound of their name, so I named the painting after the location rather than the subject matter.

Oil on paper, 36" x 11.75," $600
Prints will be available soon.
